Positional Qualities of the WSA Player

The below mentioned qualities should be prevalent at the ages of twelve and older. All players below the age of twelve should begin to show these characteristics at age appropriate levels. Coaches should not attempt to place players in positions based solely on the below qualities. These characteristics are derived from the "ideal soccer player" on a position specific basis and should be considered more heavily at appropriate age levels. Coaches and/or players in the U-12 age group and younger should pay only minimal attention to the below descriptions as positional training is not relevant at that age level.

Goal Keeper

  • Athletic. . . light on feet
  • Physically defined and intimidating, slightly taller
  • Mentally tough and very courageous/brave
  • Vocal. . . born leader
  • Solid foot skills. . . can play out of net

Outside Back

  • Relentless attitude. . . very persistent
  • Slightly larger height and/or width
  • Good Technique on ball
  • Good in the air
  • Can defend 1v1 comfortably
  • Speedy
  • Can hit driven ball accurately at 25-35 yds

Center Back

  • Good size
  • Decent pace but very intelligent
  • Vocal. . . born leader
  • Excellent technique on the ball
  • Understands and can read the game. . . anticipation skills

Outside Midfield

  • Strong foot for that side of field
  • Very good speed and endurance
  • Relentless attitude - persistent
  • More of an individual. . . enjoys being 1v1 entire game
  • Ability to finish off a cross
  • Strong enough to swerve cross in from various angles

Central Midfield

  • Great stamina and speed
  • Can read game very well. . . is a "giver/creator"
  • Loves to be focal point and leader. . . can take responsibility
  • Is above average in all areas of Technique and Tactics
  • Future Coach

Striker

  • Good Speed
  • Very creative - has flair
  • Individual that loves attention
  • Good size for "air work"
  • Strong ability to shoot with accuracy and pace from 25yds in
  • A knack for being in the right spot
  • Comfortable receiving/playing with back to goal
  • A bit selfish at times

Along with the qualities mentioned above all players regardless of position should acquire and possess the following:

  • Ability to play with both feet comfortably.
  • Ability to pass and receive consistently.
  • Ability to play defensively/offensively in a 1v1, 1v2, 2v1, 2v2, 3v2 and 3v3 situation.
  • Ability to combine with other players on the field for attacking purposes.
  • An understanding that each player plays for his/her teammates and each player has a role on the field they must focus on in an attempt to fit within the bigger picture.
  • Creativity
  • Discipline
  • Passion to continually learn and improve.
